Importing Goods from China to Thailand: What to Prepare Before Ordering
Before ordering goods from China, check the product, supporting documents and applicable licensing requirements. Clear information helps an import company assess the work involved, likely costs and preparation needed.
For products requiring permits, Pannarit’s approach is to complete the necessary licensing process before placing the order, reducing the risk of paying for goods without the documentation or approvals needed for import.
Why are a photo and price not enough?
Similar-looking products can have different ingredients, materials and intended uses. Thai Customs explains that restricted goods require authorization from the relevant authorities and supporting documentation.
Six groups of information to prepare
1. Product identity and intended use
Provide the name, model, brand and purpose: retail sale, raw material or manufacturing use. Include product photos, labels and supplier links. General descriptions such as “powder” or “industrial equipment” are insufficient for a meaningful assessment.
2. Ingredients, materials and technical details
Request relevant composition, material, size, electrical or operating specifications. Useful documents may include a product specification, Certificate of Analysis (COA) or Safety Data Sheet (SDS). These are examples for assessment, not documents universally required for every product.
3. Manufacturer and supplier details
Prepare the manufacturer’s name, address, country of manufacture and documentation contact. If buying through a trader, confirm whether they can obtain documents from the actual manufacturer. An overseas certificate does not automatically establish compliance with Thai requirements.
4. Quantity, price and packaging
Provide quantity, unit price, total value, weight and packaging dimensions where known. State which transport charges or other costs the supplier’s quotation includes. Clearly distinguish estimates from confirmed details.
5. Proposed importer and existing documents
Explain whether you intend to import under your own company or would like Pannarit to assess importing under its name within the relevant license scope. List existing permits and documents. For example, food imported for sale involves Thai FDA licensing and documentation procedures; assessment must consider the product, license holder and applicable steps.
6. Purchasing status and target date
State whether you are requesting quotations, have paid a deposit or have started production. Include your target delivery or usage date. Resolve the required documentation and licensing before ordering rather than waiting until goods arrive.
Can you start with incomplete information?
Yes. Send what you have and identify missing details so the team can establish what to request from the supplier. A preliminary assessment is not confirmation that a product can be imported or a final quotation.
Follow this sequence: Consultation and assessment → Required licensing before ordering → Sourcing and purchase → Transport, customs clearance and delivery.
